Jeangu Macrooy has just landed a one-way ticket to the Eurovision Song Contest final.

The 26-year-old has been confirmed to represent reigning champions The Netherlands at Eurovision this May in Rotterdam.

And the singer – who is originally from Paramaribo in Suriname – has big shoes to fill, following Duncan Laurence’s win with his ballad Arcade last year in Tel Aviv.

Jeangu, who has been living in The Netherlands since 2014, said: ‘I am indescribably honoured! It’s a dream come true and the most beautiful thing that has come my way so far.

‘My team and I are excited to make the Netherlands proud! Let’s go!’

Eric van Stade, the managing director of Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS and member of the selection committee said: ‘The song he delivered touched us right away. We are very happy that Jeangu wants to go on this journey with us!’

Jeangu’s song has to be revealed.

The Eurovision hopeful has been performing since 2011, when he formed a duo with his twin brother Xillan.

So far, he has released two solo albums, 2017’s High On You and 2019’s Horizon, and his debut single Gold was used in an ad for Game Of Thrones.

Jeangu gets an automatic place in the final alongside the Big Five – the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Italy and Germany – as the representative of the current winners.

The line-up for Eurovision 2019 is already shaping up nicely, with a number of countries already confirming their entrants.
