Javi Gracia expresses surprise at Watford sacking in official statement

Former Watford boss Javi Gracia has declared himself surprised after being sacked by the Hornets.

Watford announced on Saturday that Gracia, who led the club to the FA Cup final and an 11th place finish in the Premier League last term, had been dismissed.

He was immediately replaced by compatriot Quique Sanchez Flores, returning to Vicarage Road after himself departing in 2016.

The Hornets sit bottom of the Premier League after a poor start, losing three of their first four matches.

They drew their last fixture before the international break – a 1-1 draw at Newcastle – but it wasn’t enough to save the 49-year-old from the axe.

Gracia had expected to be in charge of the club’s next two matches, against Arsenal and Man City.

In a statement released on Sunday, Gracia said” “After the unexpected announcement about the termination of my contract after only four matches, I want to express my surprise after completing the best season in Watford’s history.

“I respect this decision and I’d like to reassure that the excellent relationship I have with Gino Pozzo and Filippo Giraldi, and this is not going to change despite my abrupt exit of the club.

“I am grateful to this club for allowing me to manage this great club in the Premier League, it has been an incredible experience with very special moments like the FA Cup final I had the privilege to enjoy.

Watford chiefs acted ruthlessly to sack the Spaniard, to whom they had handed a four-and-a-half year contract only last November.

They had grown concerned at the prospect of being sucked into a relegation battle, following a run of just one win in 10 Premier League outings, and having taken just 39 points from the last 38 games.

The Hertfordshire club had also conceded 17 goals in their last seven league games, while they hadn’t kept a clean sheet since February.

However, pundit Chris Sutton was scathing about the decision, labelling it “a disgrace” and claiming the change “can’t be justified.”

Sanchez Flores’ return makes him Watford’s 10th boss since 2012.
