James Maddison is a doubt for Leicester City’s Premier League meeting with Newcastle on Sunday after picking up an ankle injury.

The in-form play-maker scored the winner for the Foxes in their 2-1 win over Tottenham last Saturday but also picked up a fitness problem in the match at the King Power.

The 22-year-old looked like he needed to be substituted as the Spurs match neared its conclusion, but he was left on the field to complete the full 90 minutes, and now he may miss the next Premier League outing.

Maddison was left out of Leicester’s 4-0 Carabao Cup win over Luton on Tuesday night, when assistant manager Chris Davies was asked about the player’s fitness.

‘Madders got a knock on his ankle and he looks a doubt for the weekend, but we’ll see how he is in recovery this week,’ said Davies.

The former Norwich man will be tested by his club in the coming days, with the Foxes hoping he is available to take on the Magpies as they look to maintain their third place in the Premier League.

Maddison created more chances than any other player in the division last season and spoke to the Athletic about his differing roles in the Leicester side.

‘Even when the manager asks me to play off the left, he gives me licence to drift between the lines,’ Maddison told the Athletic.

‘He’s not the kind of manager who says: “Right, you’re on the left, you have to go and stick to the touchline.”

‘That’s not the type of player I am, so it wouldn’t play to my strengths.

We have a very attacking left full back in Ben Chilwell who, if I come inside and leave that space out wide, will eat it up. And if I am playing centrally in a four, I can’t just have a “free role”.

‘There are defensive responsibilities as a No 8. You have to put in a shift.’
