It is strange for a writer to be jealous of their own work, but with the Guardians Holiday Special held up, that’s exactly how James Gunn is feeling.
Following his completion of The Suicide Squad and his Peacemaker spin-off series, James Gunn immediately began work on his Marvel duo of projects, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, the latter of which will premiere on Disney+ this holiday season before the third movie hits cinemas next summer. According to Gunn though, the script he wrote for the Holiday Special is so good that he has found himself getting jealous of it as he is filming Guardians 3. While the Holiday Special was meant to film first in the back-to-back shoot, the rise of Omicron cases meant a change that Gunn explained is something they have had to work around.
“It’s still upcoming in the shoot,” Gunn told Collider when discussing the status of the show. “We were supposed to shoot one day in LA, and there’s too much Omicron around, so we couldn’t do it. We’re going to have to fit it in. I haven’t started yet. I’m excited to. It’s fun. The holiday special is… I’m almost jealous of it, even though I wrote it because people freak out so much on how much they love the script for the holiday special that I’m almost like, ‘Well, wait. I’ve got this movie here I’ve been working on for two years. You love the holiday special that I literally wrote in a very short amount of time. But, it is really funny and really good.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the Holiday Special are expected to be the last contribution of James Gunn to the MCU, with the director seeing his future very much lying with Warner Bros. and their DCEU franchise. Having already scored a hit with The Suicide Squad, and gaining a solid early critics rating for the Peacemaker spin-off series on HBO Max, Gunn already has several other DC-related projects lined up.
The Guardians of The Galaxy Holiday Special Is Essential Viewing For MCU Fans.
Although the phrase “holiday special” has been synonymous for years with the much joked about Star Wars Holiday Special, James Gunn has gone out of his way to make sure that fans of the MCU need to see this Holiday Special before going into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, as he previously hinted that there are some important pieces of the Marvel story told there.
“It’s in-canon, it’s about the Guardians, you’re gonna learn stuff that you need to learn before Volume 3, and it’s great. I’m really happy with it.”
Of course, we know that we will first be seeing some of the Guardians, at least in this summer’s Thor: Love and Thunder, with images of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and others on set being shared online during that movie’s production. While their role in the movie, like much of the plot, is unknown, it is a crossover that fans have been itching to see since the final scenes of Avengers: Endgame when Thor and the Guardians left Earth together, and will certainly set up what is to come in the Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3.
