Personal terms are already thought to have been agreed on a £180,000-a-week deal in Milan.

Lukaku’s agent Federico Pastorello confirmed both Inter and the striker, 26, are keen on the move.

After holding a lengthy meeting with San Siro chiefs on Tuesday, Pastorello was asked whether Inter were trying to sign Lukaku.

He said: “Yes, he’s publicly expressed his plans and desires. We’ll see what happens.

“Lukaku is a dream, a difficult one to make happen as such, but I believe nothing is impossible. It’s not impossible and Inter is trying hard.”

United want to cash in on Lukaku but only if they recoup the £75m they paid Everton in 2017.

The former Chelsea forward scored 15 goals last season but struggled to lead the line for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Lukaku wants out

He is hoping to have better luck under new Inter boss Antonio Conte, who tried to sign him for the Blues two years ago.

Lukaku said: “Good that Conte went to Inter, for me, he is the best coach in the world.

“As for my future, I have already made a decision that I still cannot communicate publicly out of respect for Manchester United with whom I have a contract.

“I am a big Serie A fan, those close to me know that I have always wanted to play in the English league and in the Italian one, I love Italy.

“And then Cristiano Ronaldo arrived, Sarri will go to Juventus, Ancelotti is at Napoli, it will be an exciting Serie A.

“The club and my agent will talk about it but I have already made my decision.”

Lukaku’s Belgium manager Roberto Martinez – who also worked with the striker at Goodison Park – is keen for him to leave Old Trafford.

Martinez said: “It is clear that he has to leave Manchester United. It would be a good thing for both parties. It is now important that Romelu finds the right club.”
