Intel Confirms World Open Esports Event Will Take Place Alongside Tokyo Olympics

Intel’s global Rocket League and Street Fighter tournament originally announced in 2019 is officially back on, coinciding with the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Qualifiers for both games will begin in June with regional finals held in mid-July.

The Intel World Open was initially planned by Intel with the support of the IOC to lead up to the 2020 Tokyo Games. Following their cancellation last year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was also put on hold.

With the recent announcement of the Olympic Virtual Series for a variety of sports simulation titles, the International Olympic Committee is increasing the presence of gaming surrounding its events despite little movement towards bringing popular esports titles to the Olympic Games itself.
