Innocent season 2 actor Shaun Dooley opens up about 'hardest' period in career

Innocent is back with its second series and a new story to tell. The ITV drama will see what happens after schoolteacher Sally Wright (played by Katherine Kelly) is released from prison after five years, having been wrongly convicted of the murder of a student. DCI Mike Braithwaite (Shaun Dooley) will be heading up the investigation which continues after her release.

Student Matty Taylor was killed five years prior and everyone blamed Sally for his death.

It was believed they were having an affair and led to her killing him but vital evidence shows up to prove her innocence.

However, this means the killer remains at large and it’s up to Mike to return to the drawing board to figure out who it really was.

Actor Shaun Dooley portrays Mike in Innocent season two who had an intense experience during filming for the show.

Dooley explained: “It was utterly petrifying, on top of all the Covid, not knowing how we were going to film, how it was going to work, a lot of us hadn’t done any acting for six, seven, eight months.

“So we were all kind of like ‘what if we forgot? What if we can’t do it anymore?’ and everyone came in with this feeling of ‘what if it’s gone? What if everything I’ve built up, what if it’s gone and I can’t do it anymore?’

“But weirdly the kind of two-week lockdown for the CID team really galvanised us as a group, it was like we were all going through the same thing, forced together to not see each other but be in the same block of apartments.

“And pushed us onto Zoom and everything else to rehearse and to pull apart the investigation and really get the whole investigation under our skin and know exactly [what was going on].

“The first two and a half weeks were all of the CID scenes so everything with a whiteboard, all the interviews, it was all crammed into that two and a half weeks.

“Personally, it was the hardest two and a half weeks I had ever, ever done, just in terms of weight and amount to do, I’ve never had that before, that much weight.

“And it was utterly really frightening.”

Dooley also commented on how some aspects of living in coronavirus times sneaked their way onto the set.

He continued: “You would do a huge long scene and then you discover one of the SA’s (supporting actors) have left their mask on all the way through it.

“Which was nobody’s fault because we all get used to putting these things on and forgetting that they’re on and you look back at the shot.

“There was a huge drive from everybody, crew, cast, across the board to make sure this worked because we felt we were a bit pioneering in the fact we were dipping our toes into the water as we had to make it work.

“We had to be a production that left going ‘we’ve done it, we’ve filmed, we’ve got to the end, we’ve created something and we got through it’ and therefore setting an example for other production companies and for the Government to see we can do it.”
