IKEA is ditching the traditional turkey roast this Christmas by going meat-free for the first time ever.
The flat-pack furniture giant has scrapped all meat-dishes on the Christmas menu across all of its stores.
From November 4, Ikea shoppers can instead choose from a brie and cranberry tart and vegan vegetable tarts and mince pies.
The £4.25 cheese tart is made from puff pastry, cranberry chutney, brie cheese, topped with hazelnuts and pumpkin seeds – and is served with roasted root veg.
While the £3.95 vegan tart option comes with puff pastry, glazed root vegetables and thyme – and it’s also served with vegetables including Brussel sprouts.
Both dishes will be available as part of Ikea’s £5 lunchtime offer, which includes a dessert and drink.
Ikea hasn’t yet released details about the vegan mince pies or the price, but if you’re not fussed about the meat-free Christmas food then Ikea’s core menu will remain the same.
Last year, Ikea offered a turkey wellington with roast potatoes, veggies, cabbage and gravy for £4.50.
Shoppers could also nab a sprout and parsnip roast with the same sides for a cheaper £3.95.
The retailer said the move to vegetarian and vegan meals is an aim to offer more “planet-friendly and sustainable meals”.
Lee Tupshafski, range manager at Ikea Food, said: “We know that Christmas dinners are an important part of the festive season, and we really want to encourage our customers to try something new this year.
“Both our meat-free dishes are packed full of flavour, to showcase how more sustainable options can be just as tasty.”
Ikea has 19 large branches across the UK. You can find your nearest one using its store locator tool.
If you’re annoyed by the news, you’ll be pleased to know that Ikea is throwing a big Christmas feast on December 12 and it includes its meatballs.
Ikea is also bringing Christmas joy by selling a real Christmas tree for £9.
