Ian McKellen has turned his back on dog lovers after being converted by the hotly anticipated movie, Cats.

The 80-year-old will be starring in the musical as Gus, and recently revealed that the final cut has changed his perception of the feline characters.

Taking to Twitter, the actor shared a confession where he told his followers how he has fallen in love with the film.

Starting off his post, the Lord Of The Rings star said: ‘A confession: I’ve never been a fan of cats. Dogs for me every time, to look at and be friends with.

‘But I’ve just seen the final cut of the imminent “CATS” movie and I’m a convert.’

He went onto praise the director Tom Hooper for putting together a cast made up of what he called, ‘the world’s most sensational dancers’.

‘Time and again I gasped as they cavorted and spun and tapped across the screen,’ Ian said: ‘Even Fred Astaire would be impressed.

‘Francesca Hayward from the Royal Ballet in her first film is a movie-star for the ages. She can act and sing and omg can she dance!’

He continued: ‘Get ready to fall too for Laurie Davidson as the hapless magician and for Les Twins, leaping and flying. And for the rest.

‘Matching the moves are the voices – Hudson, Swift par excellence. And the comedy from Corden and Rebel Wilson.

‘I never expected, on top of this festival of new ad established talent, to also be moved by the simple story of the Jellicle Ball.’

Wrapping up his statement, the icon wrote: ‘But then, with the ineffable Judi Dench back in a musical, I shouldn’t really have been surprised.

‘Other dog lovers, prepare to be enchanted.’

Ian’s confession comes after he was forced to defend the CGI and special effects used in the film.

Cats is out in cinemas on 20 December.
