Los Cabos is a renowned celebrity hot spot in Mexico. Being only a stone’s throw away from America, there are so many Hollywood stars that jet in such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Aniston and Robert De Niro. It might have been less on our radar here in the UK but with direct flights from London recently launching, it has been getting a lot of well deserved attention.
Located at the most Southern point of the Baja California Peninsula, stretching down from America’s East Coast, Los Cabos is surrounded by both the Sea of Cortes and the Pacific Ocean. It’s a really unique mixed landscape of desert, stunning beaches and scenic mountainous zones so whether you want a taste of traditional Mexican charm, adventure or a luxury resort stay, there is something to tempt all travellers.
When we stepped off the plane, considering it was November, it was a warm 26 degrees and a world away from the London chill we left behind – bliss! The weather stays warm throughout the year so if you want a super hot getaway in the summer or winter sun, Los Cabos guarantees that year-round summer glow. After a quick 45-minute drive from the airport in luxury transport arranged by the hotel, we arrived at the stunning new hotel, Nobu Los Cabos.
On entering the hotel resort, I was in awe. The combination of clean Japanese interior lines and the Mexican sea in sight had this instant healing influence wash over me. It was immediately clear to see the beautiful fusion of Japanese and local Mexican design. This is the case of all Nobu hotels around the world to ensure each Nobu hotel destination reflects local authenticity.
We were shown to our room by our private butler who exchanged numbers with us to ensure if ever we needed anything during our stay, she was only a quick call away – very slick. If I could describe the room in one word it would be ‘zen’. With neutral shades and wooden furniture highlighting the Japanese influence, it was incredibly calming. The room had electronic curtains which opened out to your own private terrace with sun loungers and your own private pool for the ultimate relaxation. The bathroom was a personal favourite of mine, it was incredibly unique with floor to ceiling marble walls, a beautiful pebble designed splash wall and stunning traditional Japanese Onsen Teak wooden bath. There was a rain shower so you truly felt as if you were stepping into a natural oasis. Japanese style evolves around clean and uncluttered living, holding tightly to balance, it was very clear to see that natural beauty was core to the design here at Nobu Los Cabos.
The hotel itself sits beautifully on the seafront, there are two pools which are really unique in design with both reflecting the two surrounding seas. The Cortes pool is light with the beach in sight where the Pacific is a darker pool surrounded by palm trees. There is a third Nobu infinity pool situated near the restaurant which is very sleek in design and placed right on the beach front. You can’t swim in the sea but of course can walk along the soft sand and soak up the healing sound of the crashing waves. My favourite pool spot was the The Cortes pool, I loved that you could lie there with sea in sight whilst listening to sultry music from the live DJ and extremely tentative staff on hand to cater for your every need. It was a beautiful spot to watch the sun go down each afternoon.
In terms of the food, if you are looking for healthy and fresh food, this hotel ticks all the boxes as much of the ingredients are locally sourced or even grown on site which is particularly special. There are three main restaurants on site but as a sushi fan I was particularly excited to try Nobu Los Cabos and Chef Nobu’s inventive dishes did not disappoint. The slow cooked Wagyu Sukiyaki (beef) was incredibly tender and the infamous black cod miso is something you can’t fly home without tasting. When paired with Nobu’s bespoke Japanese sake wine or bold cocktails and sea view in sight, you are sure to have a very special evening there.
Another favourite of mine was Malibu Kitchen, an organic and sustainable farm to table concept restaurant. The interiors clearly reflect the Californian vibe which is where the first of Chef Helene Henderson’s restaurants launched. It’s the sort of laid back spot you could sit all day soaking up the chic chilled out vibe. The menu is really unusual and incredibly fresh satisfying all foodies looking for new and unusual healthy dishes- the avocado pizza (have you ever heard of a better combination?!) did not last long on the table. I would also recommend trying the ‘Vegan Chop’ bowl or grass fed burger. Malibu Kitchen is a day to night spot that integrates local Mexican dishes with a healthy twist.
If you are looking for bars, there are plenty to quench your thirst with gorgeous views to match. There are two bars at Nobu restaurant, one in Malibu Farm, Playabar close by the Cortes pool for poolside cocktails, the Pacific restaurant bar and the Cortez swim up bar, they can take you from day to the early hours at night.
The beautiful hotel design and fresh local food at the hotel was a perfect way to wind down but this was supported by the stunning on site Esencia Wellness area of the hotel which deserves a very special mention. Its an incredibly tranquil space with natural Japanese design features integrated with asian inspired beauty treatments. The fitness centre area has all the latest technogym machines, full weights area, TRX, and spin bikes so for all you gym bunnies to keep up your training whilst away. There are a number of classes available each day such as spinning and HIIT or outdoor yoga and pilates. After class you receive a fresh ‘juice of the day’, which is a lovely touch!
The spa area is particularly special, the signature spa experiences draw on the best practise in wellness and the finest Natura Bissé products are used. Before your treatment you enter a calming area with herbal and fruit teas on tap. You are given a heated neck and shoulder wrap which was bliss to reduce tension and wind down ahead of your treatment. I would highly recommend the Essencia 50m complete body massage which is perfect to book in post flight. It will relax your muscles whilst stimulating your lymphatic system. After your treatment you must give the outdoor hydrotherapy garden a try. It features a water circuit, experiential shower, cabana jacuzzi, outdoor shower, steam and sauna areas, and a hydrotherapy pool providing you with incredible bliss.
You will leave Nobu Los Cabos wanting to stay a little longer but feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. It’s no wonder the warm and tentative staff say ‘Welcome Home’ on arrival as I promise you that you will long to travel back after an incredible stay here.
