I tried the sell-out Kat Von D mascara and it was better than false lashes

PRODUCT

Kat Von D Go Big Or Go Home Mascara, £20

THE HYPE

From her liquid liner to her liquid lipsticks, whatever Kat Von D touches turns to gold and it seems that her Go Big Or Go Home Mascara is no exception. Whilst it’s not launching in the UK until April 15 at Debenhams (we’re waiting with baited breath), it’s already sold out over the pond. The extreme volume vegan mascara is powered by plant-based fats and promises mega volume and intense black lashes that last and last without smudging, flaking or clumping, no matter how many layers you apply.

The product gets extra brownie points from us here at GLAMOUR HQ because the 100% vegan blend of nourishing waxes from olive and sunflower oils is Kat Von D’s solution to replacing the beeswax typically found in most mascaras. It’s apparently these plant-based fats that help create that coveted extreme volume and deep black pigment.

BEAUTY BIO

I have pretty long, dark lashes naturally but I’ve struggled to find a mascara that gives effects equal to a heated curler in a few swipes without leaving my lashes resembling a spider. I’ve never tried a Kat Von D product before and I’d heard great things about this hyped-up mascara so I was excited to see if it lived up to the reviews.

THE REVIEW

Firstly, the actual tube is the biggest one I’ve ever encountered so it’s not ideal for popping into your clutch on a night out but I won’t judge a book by its cover. Thankfully, the actual formula totally lived up to the hype.

Whilst it did take a good three coats to achieve the level of pigment and curl I wanted, the signature fluff brush, which is inspired by a round bristle hairbrush, created a super volumised blown-out look without leaving them clumpy.

According to Kat, it’s the wavy fibre bristles on the fluff brush that hold on to more formula to perfectly separate each lash at the lash line for a fanned out, eye-opening effect, which is exactly the look I was going for.

You’ll need at least two applications to coat every lash but it’ll be worth it: I was left with fluffy, full, intense coverage that lasted from morning latte to light’s out. I’m making this a makeup bag essential and so should you – especially if you care about the planet.

Here are some of the other mascaras we’ve given the GLAMOUR seal of approval…
