Nadiya Hussain’s emotional win on the sixth series of The Great British Bake Off had the nation blubbing.

And the 35-year-old had us tearing up again, after she was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list.

Nadiya was named alongside stars including Olivia Newton John, Sam Mendes and Steve McQueen on the annual list, joining fellow culinary star Ainsley Harriott in receiving an MBE.

And the British Bangladeshi baker was overwhelmed as she reacted to the honour, which she received for her services to broadcasting and the culinary arts.

The star wrote: ‘Even my car is crying tears of joy! Thank you for all the kind words and absolutely wonderful messages! Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this would ever happen to me.

‘I know my grandparents would be really proud, they wouldn’t understand what was going on, or what it means but they would be proud none the less. I just know it ! Little old rice farmers family in the middle of nowhere with a grand daughter with an MBE ! Who would have thought it?! I wish they were alive to enjoy this moment with us!’

Nadiya continued: ‘I have had an exhilarating and exciting few years and I have done weird, wonderful and scary things. Long may it continue.

A stay at home mum to her three kids Musa, Dawud and Maryam with her husband Abdal, Nadiya was catapulted into the spotlight and embarked on a successful TV career, with a number of cookery shows on the BBC.

She has also written eight cookery books (four for kids), two fiction novels and a biography, and released a range of cookware, while she has also been vocal about her experiences with anxiety and panic disorder.

Receiving her MBE won’t be the first time Hussain has rubbed shoulders with royalty.

In 2016, she was commissioned to bake the Queen’s cake for her 90th birthday celebrations.

Nadiya chose to make an orange drizzle cake with orange curd and orange buttercream.
