How to make your uni pad a home from home – without breaking the bank

KITTING out kids for university can be pricey for parents. They want their room to be a home from home.

But decorating it need not cost a fortune with these tips . . .

MAKE IT STICK: Forget wall hooks and drilling in, as damage can be costly later.

Create a gallery wall using cheap frames from charity shops and make hanging strips your friend. Fix to the wall and they peel off easily when you need to remove them.

Get four strips — usually two per picture needed — for £3.50 at Wilko, currently £4 at Tesco.

For images, desenio.co.uk’s new autumn woodland collection of poster prints are great value, from £12.95. Or maybe just cut out some pictures from magazines.

MIRROR, MIRROR: Get a full-length frameless one at Argos for £10, or at Ikea for £7.

BED AHEAD: Bedding doesn’t have to be costly. For bargain sheets and duvet covers, I rate George at Asda.

A current sale includes a pair of navy pillowcases for £1.75, was £2, and a pink geo-block reversible single duvet and pillowcase set is £7, down from £10.

Also check out Oxfam online (onlineshop.oxfam.org.uk) which often has new bedding still in packets. I found a fitted sheet for £6. Likewise, the British Heart Foundation’s eBay shop has similar deals.

MAKE IT SHINE: Jazz up a room with multi-coloured LED lights, currently on offer for £11.99 at amazon.co.uk, usually £22.99.

Or 50 LED fairy lights, which can plug into a laptop USB port, are £4.99 at lights4fun.co.uk — and get ten per cent off your first order if you sign up to its newsletter.

STEP ON IT: Adding a rug can bring a room together. After extensive research, I would recommend Dunelm’s selection. Its Dazzle rug comes in several shades and starts at £14 (60 x 110cm) which is a great price.

My other favourite is the Larisa Jute Rug, £30 (100 x 150cm) — and remember to then top up your saving by claiming cashback via quido.com or topcashback.co.uk.
