How to make classic flapjacks with four ingredients during lockdown

We’re all stuck inside and it’s easy to start feeling a little down about it all – so we all probably deserve a sweet treat or two.

Having plenty of free time on our hands, coupled with many shops still struggling to cope with demand, it sounds like the perfect time to get baking them ourselves.

If you’ve already mastered cooking up some of our daily staples from scratch, like pasta and bread, then the only thing left that we’re interested in adding to our growing list of culinary skills is dessert snacks.

Flapjacks are easy to make, rumours are they last (we’ve never managed to test this theory) and they taste delicious.

You can make them as fancy as you like, but you can’t beat a classic flapjack – and you only need four ingredients and about half an hour to get the job done.

It doesn’t take long to prepare

Ingredients

  • 150g of butter
  • 75g of light brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of golden syrup
  • 250g of porridge oats

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C and grease the bottom of a tin before lining with baking paper

  2. Add the butter, sugar and golden syrup into a pan and leave on a low heat for the butter to melt, making sure to stir regularly

  3. Once it’s melted, bring it off the heat and stir in the porridge oats until they are all coated

  4. Transfer the mixture into the pre-prepared tin, spreading it out evenly, and bake in the oven for about 25 minutes, until it turns golden brown around the edges

  5. Remove from the oven and leave it to cool for a few minutes, before getting it out the tray to cool completely

  6. Cut it into rectangles like the professionals, or save time and just dig straight in
