What is Amazon Prime and how much does it cost?

A Prime membership is a premium service that gives you access to extras through Amazon.

You get free next day delivery on certain products and have access to Prime Video – Amazon’s film and TV streaming service.

Members also get access to the music streaming service, which is the retailer’s rival to Apple Music or Spotify.

It costs £7.99 per month or £79 for the year (which works out cheaper, at £6.58 per month).

You also get to use the Amazon Kindle library and access to lightning deals 30 minutes early.

Depending on how often you use Amazon – you might find that it’s cheaper than paying delivery costs every time you order.

For instance, to make your money back you’d need:

  • 20 or more clothes orders (£3.95 for one day delivery)
  • 14 media orders (£5.99 one day delivery)
  • 10 orders of anything else (£7.99 one day delivery).

How can I get Amazon Prime for free?

There’s actually a way to get around the fees so you can still bag a bargain on the big day.

Amazon offer a 30-day free trial to new customers so if you’re savvy and sign up now, then you’ll be able shop on Prime day on July 16.

You’ll need to enter in your bank details but they won’t charge you until the trial is over.

How to make sure you get the best deals on Amazon Prime Day

ALTHOUGH some of the deals might look great, it’s important to know whether they’re actually any good before parting with your cash. Here are a few things you can do to make sure you’re not going to be ripped-off

  • Check CamelCamelCamel to check the product’s price history to see if you really are getting a good deal, or whether you could get a better one later if you held out. You can also set up price alerts to let you know when the cost drops.
  • Use FakeSpot to check whether the item is genuine or not. The site scans the reviews to see if they’re “reliable” or not so you can decide whther you trust the seller.
  • Sign up to the 30 day Amazon Prime trial to take advantage of the Lightning Deals and free delivery. But remember to cancel the subscription before the trial is up or you’ll be charged the full £79.
  • Put the items you want in your basket ahead of Prime day so that when the deals drop on July 16, all you’ll have to do is pay.

Remember to cancel it before it expires though or else the money will end up leaving your account.

It’s worth setting a calendar reminder on your phone so that you don’t forget.

What is Amazon Prime Day?

Prime day is an annual event over at Amazon where millions of products have their prices slashed.

This year, bosses are promising “thousands of amazing deals worldwide”.

The shopping bonanza was launched in 2015 to celebrate Amazon’s 20th anniversary, but it’s since become an annual event.

Unlike Black Friday, all the deals are online – so there’s no chance of a brawl breaking out.

This year, the event kicks off at noon on Monday, and runs right through until the end of July 16.

What’s on offer?

We don’t yet know what will be included in the sale, but Amazon bosses have promised discounts on thousands of products across TVs, smart home, kitchen, grocery, toys, furniture, fashion and outdoor items.

The retailer is already hyping up the anticipation by launching a selection of early deals on Amazon.co.uk/primeday.

There are also going to be lots of brand new product launches through Amazon including Jabra Elite 85h copper and black headphones for £279.99 and a Bissell cordless, three-in-one, multi-surface floor cleaner for £329.99.

Lots of the launches are already showing on the website and you can even pre-order some of them now here.

Also new for Prime Day this year are “Lightning Deals”.

These deals will have limited quantities, which means once they’re gone they’re gone – so you need to get in quick to nab them.
