How to donate to Black Lives Matter even if money is tight

The death of George Floyd in police custody on May 25 has sparked outrage and protests across the US and the world.

Protestors are angry and frustrated, calling out the systematic racism and police brutality that has resulted in countless African American deaths, yet in the UK it can be hard to know what to do and how to help.

While we can of course donate to charities in need, such as Black Minds Matter, Black Lives Matter UK, Stand up to Racism and the Exist Loudly Fund, with over 8.4 million British workers on furlough and others made redundant due to the current pandemic, money is tight.

One way you can donate to the cause without breaking the bank is through watching a YouTube video, where all earnings will be donated to Black Lives Matter and other organisations which are providing bail to protestors arrested during the demonstrations.

The video is almost an hour long and was uploaded on May 30 by user Zoe Amira and features art from black creatives, as well as poetry and music and, most crucially, ads. The advertising revenue from the video will be distributed among organisations in need.

So far, the video has amassed close to 5.1 million views and all viewers need to do is be sure to have any ad blockers turned off while they are watching it.

One YouTube user commented: “This is a genius way of turning capitalism towards activism.”

While another said that these were the only ads that they would ‘never’ skip.

The video can even be muted and left open on another tab as it will still earn money, so there’s no excuse not to watch it.
