Cosmetic companies have long been using mineral-rich marine ingredients derived from our oceans in their products and you probably have a whole bathroom cabinet stuffed with sea salt body scrubs, seaweed mud masks, bath salts and sea salt hair sprays. However, there’s another little-known power ingredient from the sea making its way into our skincare and it’s promising to give you the most amazing skin.
You’ve probably never heard of sea silt extract. We won’t judge; neither had we until it started making its way into cult K-beauty brand Klavuu, Korea’s first marine pearl cosmetic brand that uses natural pearls and marine plant extracts into its products which users claim give them the most radiant and luminous complexions.
The brand’s Sea Silt Repair Ampoule is a £16.69 serum that has been flying off the virtual shelves because its formula encourages regeneration on even the most sensitive skin, creating a thin veil of protection, locking in hydration and keeping out pollution, making skin look its absolute best ever. OK, we are well and truly listening.
It turns out that it’s not just Korean beauty companies incorporating sea silt into their ranges, German beauty company La Mer (not to be confused with Crème de la Mer) have been using the magic ingredient in their products since it launched in 1981, calling it ‘one of the purest natural products’ rich in oxygen, purifying clay, sulphur, salts and minerals. La Mer’s extract is, ‘obtained in the company’s own laboratories using a unique extraction process, yielding an extract that produces visible skin care results for all skin types after a very short period of use.’
La Marin, another German beauty company, is making the most of the soothing benefits of sea silt, using the ingredient as the basis for all its products, claiming this powerful and natural extract improves skin’s elasticity that “activates the skin’s own protective functions.”
Might this be the most under-the-radar hero ingredient we never knew we needed until now? We think so.
