Washing bras. How often should we do it? That’s the question on everyone’s lips that we don’t seem to ask out loud. But when it was eventually asked on social media recently, it sparked a massive debate.
“How many time do you wear a bra before you wash it? If you say once… you’re a pick me,” Twitter user @Kheumani asked, which prompted a range of responses.
“Once. I guess I’m a pick me but at least I’m clean,” someone commented, while another wrote: “About 5-10 times. It’s really no need to wash it any sooner. But that’s just me I see. Lol.” A third added: “See this controversial bc us chested women cannot wash them so frequently $50-65 a bra is too much to be wearing down so quickly man.”
The comments section got so divisive that @Kheumani later commented: “Y’all are we really arguing over this bra topic? It’s honestly not that serious lmao.” But serious topic or not, we would like to know. Just how often should you be washing your bras?
To get the answers, GLAMOUR has enlisted the help of popular lingerie retail company, Pour Moi.
How often should I be washing my bras?
In a personal hygiene survey recently conducted by Mashable and SurveyMonkey, an average of 35% of UK women admitted to wearing a bra at least five times before washing it. While it is correct not to overwash your bras, as it can damage the elasticity of the bra, which is crucial for proper support, Pour Moi’s Lingerie Technologist, Lois Siciliano, advises washing them every two to three wears.
However, Lois stressed that the washing cycle depends on what you’ve done while wearing the bra. “When it comes to normal use, every two to three wears is fine. Obviously, that’s not the case if it’s a sports bra you’re wearing to an intense gym class or if it’s a hot summer‘s day. If you’re particularly sweaty, you should wash the bra each wear,” Lois explains.

What is the best way to wash and look after a bra?
Handwashing is the best way to keep your bras clean. It is advised to fill a sink with cool water and add a few drops of handwash liquid lingerie detergent or any other mild detergent. Place your bras with the clasps fastened in the water, give them a swirl in the water, and soak for ten minutes before gently rubbing them on the underarms and back band. Then give them a rinse in cool, clean water and lay them on a clean towel to dry.
However, if you’re a rebel and you must machine-wash, then Lois advises: “Make sure you’re using the most delicate wash available at the lowest possible temperature and preferably with no spin.”
