Hospital announces ‘baby boom’ after nine nurses reveal they’re pregnant at the same time

A hospital in the US is experiencing a “baby boom” with nine of its labour and delivery nurses expecting a child at the same time.

On Monday, Maine Medical Centre in Portland announced the news on Facebook by sharing a photo that featured eight of the nine nurses and their respective bumps.

“How’s this for a baby boom?” the caption read.

“Nine of our nurses (eight of whom are in this photo) are expecting babies between April and July! Congratulations!”

In the image, each of the nurses can be seen holding a coloured card emblazoned with their due dates, revealing that the army of babies are all expected to arrive within a matter of months of each other.

The post has since received more than 1,000 likes and hundreds of comments from well-wishers.

“Must be something in the water” one person joked.

Another commented: “This is awesome! Congrats ladies!”

Other people wondered how the hospital was going to cope with so many of its staff taking maternity leave at the same time.

“I’m curious if there will be any L&D nursing staff at MMC when I deliver…” one concerned patient wrote.

The centre was quick to reassure the Facebook user, replying: “Don’t worry! We have a plan”.

The nurses have revealed that they are all supporting each other during their pregnancies.

“It’s really nice coming to work and seeing other people who are just as pregnant and watching their bellies pop and just talking about these experiences that we are going through together,” nurse Amanda Spear told US television station WMTW.

Another one of the expectant mothers joked that the nurses would soon have enough children to start their own football team.

“Between all of these babies, and some of us have other children, I think we probably could field a football team,” she told NBC News.

The announcement follows a similar news story that went viral last year.

In August 2018, a group of 16 nurses working in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Banner Desert Medical Centre in Mesa, Arizona surprised co-workers by all becoming pregnant at the same time.

The nurses only discovered how many of them were simultaneously expecting children when they all happened to join a Facebook group chat for pregnant workers at the hospital.
