Hillary Clinton says staying in her marriage was the ‘gutsiest’ thing she’s ever done

Hillary Clinton has said the “gutsiest” thing she’s ever done was stay married to Bill Clinton.

Mrs Clinton, 71, who twice ran for president and served as the Democratic Party’s nominee in 2016, was asked the question during an interview on ‘Good Morning America’.

Despite the challenges of her long political career, the former First Lady told host Amy Robach: “I think the gutsiest thing I’ve ever done, well, personally, was make the decision to stay in my marriage.”

She then acknowledged that “publicly and politically” running for president had also taken grit, as had the simple act of “getting up every day”.

The admission shocked her daughter, Chelsea, who was sat beside her.

When asked the same question, Chelsea responded: “’Oh, goodness. I think I’m so overwhelmed by my mother’s answer that I’m a bit out of words.

“I’m so proud to be her daughter,” the 39-year-old added.

Mrs Clinton faced criticism for her decision to stick with Bill in the light of his infamous affair with Monica Lewinsky 20 years ago.

The then US President’s relationship with the 22-year-old White House intern rocked the nation and led to an impeachment trial, for which he was ultimately acquitted.

At the time, Mrs Clinton remained supportive of her husband, standing by his side and denying the allegations against him.

But later, In her 2017 book ‘What Happened’ she shed light on her internal conflict at the time.

“There were times that I was deeply unsure about whether our marriage could or should survive,’ she wrote, without specifically referencing the affair.

“But on those days I asked myself the question that mattered most to me: Do I still love him? And can I still be in this marriage without becoming unrecognizable to myself-twisted by anger, resentment, or remoteness.

“The answers were always yes. So I kept going.”

Mrs Clinton appeared on the breakfast show alongside her daughter, to promote their new book ‘The Book of Gutsy Women‘.
