Harry Redknapp sparks upset as plans to turn homeless accommodation into flats approved

Harry Redknapp’s company, Pierfront Properties, will redevelop the former Belgravia Hotel in Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, after plans were approved by the council.

The hotel has been used as accommodation for homeless people since 1988.

The 72-year-old and his wife Sandra bought the property back in 2016 for £1.25 million but had previously failed twice to convince the council to let them turn the hotel into luxury flats.

The former West Ham and Bournemouth manager will transform the hotel into 14 flats and an adjoining coach house with five houses.

In a decision notice issued last month, Bournemouth and Poole Council planning officer Tom Hubbard said, reports Mail Online: “Sympathy is extended to occupants in this respect but it is understood that the sublease for the existing HMO has already been revoked and this does not have significant bearing on planning considerations.

“The loss of HMO accommodation is not resisted in the local plan, however the council’s housing team is aware of the situation.”

Harry has faced backlash regarding the planning permission with people who live in the building hitting out.

One person living in the property, Edward Hyde, said, reports BBC: “I am pleading with yourselves to refuse the planning of our homes to give us continuing support for people who are the most vulnerable in our society.”

Another, Christopher Whitely, added: “All residents are in complete limbo for their futures.”

Wendy and Gerry Hunt have used the hotel to house homeless people since 1988 under a lease.

Gerry said: “We’ve been expecting this ruling for some time but we’re still really worried about the residents. large number of our residents have thankfully been re-housed but there are still quite a few who have not.

“Generally speaking Mr Redknapp and Pierfont Developments have not handled this process very well at all.

“Myself and my wife have been doing this for 31 years and this has been a bit of a struggle for us.”

He continued: “I was almost a young man when we started this so it’s a shame to see it coming to an end like this.”

Harry currently lives in Sandbanks with his wife Sandra, a small peninsula crossing the mouth of Poole Harbour.

Their house in one of the most exclusive postcodes in the UK and is valued at around £4 million.

The couple, who are parents to former footballer Jamie Redknapp and model Mark, bought their beachside mansion for £3.5 million four years ago.

Harry and Sandra have been married for 51 years and the latter supported him when he was crowned King of the Jungle on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! last year.

Express.co.uk has contacted Harry Redknapp’s representative for comment.
