Harry Kane says a bit of homework saw him change his technique from the penalty spot as he scored for Bayern Munich at Arsenal on Tuesday night.

The entertaining contest finished 2-2 at the Emirates, with Bukayo Saka scoring an early opener before Serge Gnabry equalised 18 minutes in.

Then Kane struck from the spot, but it was not the usual kind of penalty from the England captain, instead taking a short pause in his run up and as goalkeeper David Raya dived to his right, Kane rolled the ball into the opposite corner.

The former Spurs striker does not tend to be so cute with his penalty technique, but said he watched what Raya did against Porto in the last round and acted accordingly.

The Gunners ‘keeper made a couple of brilliant saves in the penalty shootout against Porto, but Kane used that footage to his advantage.

‘It was one of them when I have done a bit of research of his games against Porto,’ Kane told TNT Sports. ‘It was nice to see him go early and make it easier for me.’

Leandro Trossard came off the bench to score a late equaliser and leave the tie perfectly poised ahead of the return to Bavaria, where Bayern will have fans again after they were banned for this contest.

‘Having no fans here tonight was tough. Having a full stadium [next week] will push us on,’ said Kane.

‘We had a big chance to go 3-1 up but Leroy [Sane] didn’t put it away unfortunately.

‘It’s been an amazing experience in Germany personally. To see a different culture and a different league. The league is gone this season but I am there for a long time.

‘You saw a real determined team today. We had to show togetherness and show fight. Today was small step in the right direction.’
