Taking to his official Twitter account, Sam broke the news to his 40,000 followers, writing: “Absolutely gutted to share that I’ll not be able to perform at Glastonbury this weekend.

“It’s always been a dream to play at Worthy Farm and I wouldn’t miss it for the world but docs have told me I need longer to recover from illness.”

However Sam, who won a Brit Awards Critics’ Choice gong earlier this year, said he hopes to return to the festival another year.

He added: “Hopefully we’ll get a chance to return next year.”

The star added his upcoming performances at Les Eurockeenes, Down the Rabbit Hole and Barn on The Farm festivals next week have also had to be cancelled.

After reassuring his fans in Bristol that their tickets will be valid for a rescheduled show in August or a refund, he signed off saying: “Massive love to you all and thank you for your understanding.”

Trying to remain upbeat, he added: “On a slight positive, we have some new music coming out next week.”

Sam is the second act in as many days to cancel their appearance at Glastonbury, with Snow Patrol pulling out of their Friday slot yesterday.

Snow Patrol has cancelled its Glastonbury performanceThe band were due to take to The Other Stage this Friday, June 28, but writing on its official Facebook page, lead singer Gary Lightbody announced they had been forced to pull out of their slot.

He wrote: “We are sorry to have to announce the cancellation of more shows.

“Our dear brother, piano and guitar player Johnny McDaid has a serious problem with his neck and after consulting with some top neurosurgeons they are all in agreement that the only course of action is immediate surgery.”

Johnny, 42, isn’t the only band member unable to perform at the moment, as guitarist and backing vocalist Nathan Connolly is suffering from nerve damage.
