Government deletes job advert for 'Butler with knowledge of fine wine'

An advertised vacancy for a butler has been removed from the UK government’s website.

The original ad, published by the Foreign and Commonwealth office, invited people to apply for the role of “Government Butler/Function Manager”.

It demanded good knowledge of “fine wines” and food service as a minimum requirement for the role.

It added that the role would see the successful candidate managing entertaining at government functions for up to 350 people.

Applicants had until March 16 to apply and if successful would have earned £30,000 a year.

It also warned applicants that they may be expected to work late around large dinners and state occasions.

But shortly after the Mirror approached FCO for a comment on the vacancy it disappeared from the government’s job board – and has yet to reappear.

It is unclear if the job has been pulled or if will emerge rejigged.

It is perhaps not that surprising that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was the department advertising the vacancy.

Part of its role is to court relationships with foreign ambassadors and leaders, and this often involves wining and dining them.
