Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn says ‘Studio Ghibli’ style movie about the animated band is in the works

Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn has revealed that an animated movie about the group is in the works.

Fans are going to get to see their favourites 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel Hobbs in all their glory.

‘We are supposed to be making a film while we’re doing season two [of Song Machine],’ Damon explained to Radio.com’s New Arrivals show.

‘We signed contracts, we’ve begun scripts and stuff. Making an animated film that’s kind of abstract is quite a big risk for a movie studio because they’re very expensive.’

The star – who created the band with artist Jamie Hewlett – said it’s ‘quite difficult’ to tell the ‘slightly obtuse, weird story.’

‘But we will do it, we are doing it,’ he continued. ‘I see a lot of people doing animated videos these days but I don’t think they really touch the quality of ours. We’re more in the world of Studio Ghibli.’

Gorillaz recently released their latest project, a series of collaborations called Song Machine: Season One – Strange Timez.

Considering each song comes with its own animated skit, we get a feel of what’s to come with the animated movie.

The album brings together the likes of slowthai, The Cure’s Robert Smith as well as Beck and Elton John.

‘When I started last October and we put slowthai and Slaves together, there was no idea about how it was going to end,’ Damon told Double J’s Tim Shiel on Arvos.

‘I didn’t know about Elton. I didn’t know about Robert Smith. I didn’t know about any of those when I started it.’

To celebrate the release of the wonderful project, the Gorillaz plan on doing a livestreamed show in December (thanks, Covid).

They will also be going on a summer 2021 European tour much to fans delight.
