Google Maps StreetView: Users baffled by US college campus’ surreal appearance

Since it’s emergence online in 2007 Google Maps StreetView has allowed users the opportunity to explore far-flung corners of the world in virtual reality. Increasingly, though, users are discovering another way to utilise the 3D world.

Many people are hunting out unexpected findings across the globe.

One such place was found in California, in the US, where a user was left dumbfounded by their discovery.

When clicking around the campus of California State University, Northridge, the user was suddenly shocked at how its appearance shifter.

Had they just transported into another dimension, or perhaps the area is infested with magic beyond human understanding?

Two people can be seen when scanning around the area, one whose body matches the style of the “painted” background around them.

The other, however, stands out from the image – he looks completely normal, though stands with two arms raised, looking over his shoulder.

“Why is it like this?,” questions a Reddit user.

Luckily, a Google pro has an insight into why this college campus is so abnormal.

“That person either then uploaded the stylised image, or has given permission to Google to allow its Photo service to publish photos from their account.”

This isn’t the first time viewers have been confused by a location’s appearance, however.

In Tokyo, a bizarre glitch appeared to show a portal opening up in the centre of the road.

Users questioned whether this was proof of alternate dimensions.

However, experts were quick to explain it was simply the result of a glitch in post-production.

Regardless of the logical explanations, these Google mysteries are fun to think about.
