The Remainer was branded “ridiculous” for moving at a snail’s pace when it came to packing up his stuff and moving out of the two-bedroom apartment. When he quit as chancellor in protest over Boris Johnson’s refusal to rule out a no deal Brexit, Mr Hammond also gave up his use of a chauffeur-driven armoured car. On Friday he was snapped looking rather grumpy as he sat on a tube in Leicester Square station, central London, waiting for it to depart.
Mr Hammond was seen clutching with both hands a suitcase and holdall on board a Piccadilly line train.
While serving as chancellor, he had lived above No 10 Downing Street, with Theresa and Philip May staying in the more spacious four-bedroom apartment above No 11.
Arch-Brexiteer Mr Johnson moved into the larger flat after he took office on July 24 but Mr Javid had to wait a little longer to settle into his new home which was filled with Mr Hammond’s belongings.
A source told The Mail on Sunday: “We know he is a rampant Remainer, but this is ridiculous.”
Last week Mr Johnson held a vote among Downing Street employees on whether he should get a rescue dog to keep him company in his flat – with the result a resounding yes.
The Prime Minister invited his staff to have their say and promised to respect the result of the latest referendum.

Bailey made a name for herself while appearing in Mr Javid’s campaign videos as he battled it out against colleagues to replace Theresa May.
The father-of-four also mentioned the dog during a live TV debate when talking about his stubbornness, saying it took his children 10 years to convince him to get the pet.
Mr Javid will live in the No 10 pad with his wife Laura and their two youngest children.
There had been speculation the family would remain at their Fulham home after it underwent a security upgrade.
But a source confirmed to The Sunday Times: “He will be living above the shop.”
While only having been in the job less than a month, Mr Javid has hit the ground running in his preparations for Brexit.
Mr Javid is said to be planning to introduce a “Brexit 50p” to mark the day the UK severs ties with the EU.
According to the Sunday Telegraph, he asked officials if it would be possible to have batches of the coins ready for the Brexit deadline of October 31.
