Stormzy has revealed that he sought advice from Ed Sheeran about headlining Glastonbury.
The Big For Your Boots hit maker is set to take to the legendary Pyramid stage at the festival in June.
The 25-year-old rapper, real name Michael Omari, said he turned to the Perfect singer for tips after Sheeran headlined with an epic set back in 2017.
He told Kiss FM: “This is a real name-drop, I have spoken to Ed about it, Chris Martin, and Adele, right,” he said in an interview with U.K. radio station KISS FM.
“I think that’s a massive blessing, even to mention those people and these are my friends now and they’re all of course former Glastonbury headliners. So yeah, they’ve given me the tips and the powers.”
The grime star also vowed to give fans a headline-worthy show in a bid to “prove” himself.
“I’ve been given this opportunity and this stage where it’s time to prove myself again. The Glasto stage is the world stage. That is the biggest festival in the world,” he said. “This is the biggest stage of my career. But also about me saying ‘I’m Stormzy, I do this, I’m the Glastonbury headline. I’ll give you a flipping headline show’.”
Describing Sheeran as his “brother,” Stormzy also told how he intends to play his second album to his fellow musician to see if he approves.
Speaking to Capital Breakfast on Friday, he said: “Ed’s like my brother but [also] him being where he is in his career, he’s always someone I’m looking to for inspiration, do you know what I mean?
“So I always hit him up. Even towards the end of my album process I hit him up and let him know where I was with it. I’m gonna go see him in a couple of weeks actually to…play him the album.”
Stormzy admitted that if his work does not gain Sheeran’s seal of approval, then he knows he’s “not on good waters” with the record.
The comments come as part of the rapper’s promotion for new song Vossi Bop, which dropped alongside a video featuring Luther actor Idris Elba in a surprise cameo.
