The first week of March marked the end of fashion week season and the start of what can be the most confusing time in fashion. You’ve been inundated with incredible runway looks and the latest trends for Autumn/Winter, but in reality, spring has only just sprung, and as for summer? Well, summer seems an entire lifetime away. The big trends from last season may just now be hitting stores – think square toes, head-to-toe neutrals and all season boiler suits. But we’ve got next season’s styles in our sights too – hello pointed toes, tweed tailoring and oversized everything from knitwear to waist belts.
So if you want to get a head start on the next season, while still paying homage to the current spring styles, here are 4 trends from the Autumn/Winter runways you can add to your wardrobe right now.
Tweed Galore
Tweed, check, plaid – even argyle, it was all over the runways and teamed with every colour you could imagine. From classic camel at Victoria Beckham to glamorous glitter at Roland Mouret, it showed there was definitely a place for tweed, no matter what the occasion.
If you’re someone that likes new additions to be versatile then this check trouser suit from Me+Em hits the mark, with a little pop of spring, featuring cream and pale pink highlights. Team it with a standout chunky trainer for that cool kid vibe, or keep it chic for the office with a simple black boot and roll neck combo.
If you don’t want to embrace head-to-toe tweed, then perhaps these cropped check trousers from Maison Margiela are a step in the right direction as we move through the seasons and the weather changes. The ideal length for contrasting, feminine slingbacks or equally on-trend dressed down.
Elsewhere, this checkered trench from Topshop will definitely keep you warm on those cooler spring days. But if you just want a subtle nod to the trend that you can dress both up and down, then this blazer from J Crew, is perfect to team with jeans or leather trousers, while also highlighting THE colour to be seen in right now – yellow.
Vibrant Reds
You can’t have missed the powerful, vibrant reds all over the catwalks from London to Milan this season, and there’s no easier trend to pull into your wardrobe, at any time of the year, than a ‘go to’ colour and a primary one at that. Think classic red with the volume turned up and a wonderfully rich, orange undertone.
This incredible asymmetric dress from Twinset is the ideal date night look to team with contrasting boots, like we saw during the Emporio Armani Milan show. If you want to incorporate the SS19 colour blocking/bright suiting trend too, you could go all out and embrace this statement tuxedo suit from Joseph for your next extra special occasion.
If you prefer a tamer take on the shade, then maybe you could add this year’s It bag to your collection – the Chloe C Bag in the shade of Autumn 2019 or even a satin skirt from Topshop that will add a little spice to your usual Saturday brunch look.
There are so many red pieces flooding both high street and luxury retailers right now that you would swear it’s Saint Valentine’s day all over again – but remember, your style never has to follow the rules – make some new fashion rules and wear the shade of red that makes your heart go boom!
Oversized Silhouettes
It’s safe to say that almost every designer this fashion week added a few oversized silhouettes to their shows. Whether it was as simple as dropped shoulders, like we saw across the knitwear at Christopher Kane, or the cinched trench coats seen all over the Dior runway, oversized was a huge statement – literally. If you’re a fitted outfit lover, you may want to look away now, or perhaps I can change your mind!
While we’re wishing for sunshine we know realistically there’ll be cooler days ahead, so this camel coat from Stella McCartney is a saviour for those days, while also hitting the neutrals for spring trend, head on. Wear with your favourite skinny jeans so as not to swamp your figure and you’ll be embracing the trend without losing your usual style, all the way through to Autumn.
If all you really want to add to your closet is a more casual piece that’s perfectly wearable and ideal for layering, then this dropped shoulder knit from All Saints is your ideal pick of the bunch. Those shoulders are a perfect way to mirror the trend while not stepping too far away from stereotypical spring shades and it’s versatile enough to style for work, brunch or even a more relaxed date night.
If the sun does grace us for a while and you’re looking for something just a touch oversized but still with that classic styling that will see you through multiple seasons, then this shirt from Ganni ticks all the boxes without the extremes. A crisp white top will always be in fashion, but those sleeves and hint of a peplum waist are very on trend right now.
Top Tip: If you’re finding it hard to get on board with the trend then don’t forget that belting your outfits, à la JW Anderson, will make them much more wearable.
Statement Suiting
We saw bright, bold tailoring all over the Spring/Summer runways, but we also saw statement suiting featured at almost every show for Autumn 2019. Interspersed and sometimes teamed alongside the newest trend for country chic tweed, it stood out once again as a trend to be reckoned with, just a quieter version of the juicy spring shades. 2-piece styles from designers such as Givenchy, Gabriela Hearst, Saint Laurent and more all wowed with power shoulders, longline hems and the return of the single-breasted blazer.
If you’re looking for a suit to be talked about, then this sunshine yellow version from Reiss is definitely the way to add a little happiness into your wardrobe. The cut is classic and fitted, while the colour works for so many occasions – summer weddings included!
This cream 80’s style from the queen of tailoring Victoria Beckham, is definitely one to add to your capsule wardrobe. Think relaxed Miami Vice for the spring and summer months and then the layering can begin in the cooler autumn months. Team with tan sandals in the sunshine and killer boots in the shade. Or perhaps if you’re confident enough and looking for an investment piece, then this straight from the runway look from Roksanda might be the statement you’ve been searching for.
And my pick for something a little more subtle as well as completely purse-friendly would be this swoon-worthy duck egg blue co-ord from Topshop. Not only is pastel blue and pistachio a huge shade for Autumn/Winter, but it also incorporates the newest ‘it’ accessory – wider than wide waist belts. Be still my trend-loving heart.
2019 is definitely the year of colour, no matter what the season, but most of all it’s the year of mix and match. Style a single trend or a few, but however many you choose, do it with confidence!
