GLAMOUR columnist Nikki Wolff reveals exactly how to heat-proof your makeup for the ultimate summer skin

As we head into August and set off on our summer jaunts, we all need our makeup to work that little bit harder and go the extra distance. So, for this month’s column, I wanted to share my tips and tricks on how to heatproof your makeup for long-lasting, flawless and glowing summer skin. Here are my top tips for heat-proofing your beauty regime…

Lighten the load

The key to having natural-looking skin that survives under the sun is to not overload the skin with products. Pre-makeup, go for moisturisers or primers that have SPF included such as Cle de Peau’s Correcting Cream Veil SPF21, which not only transforms the skin from rough to radiant, but also saves you from the extra step of sun protection. I also love mixing a bronzing gel such as Clinique’s Face Bronzing Gel Tint into my foundation to give that sheer, sun-kissed look.

Use cream or liquid instead of powder

Swap your powder products in favour of creams, liquids and gels that blend more seamlessly into the skin. I love the Trinny London Flush Blush which has a buildable creamy formula that glides onto the cheeks and lips for fool-proof application. Or, for those who prefer a matte finish to the skin, try Shiseido’s Minimalist Whipped Powder Blush which has a unique mousse-to-powder texture so it’s still easy and effortless to apply, but dries to a matte and breathable powder.

Waterproof winners

Hot weather calls for water, sweat and heat-proof products. My favourite mascara for volume, length and longevity is Sensai’s Clever 38 Degree Mascara which can only be removed with warm water at 38 degrees or more. As a finishing touch, Urban Decay’s All Nighter Waterproof Setting Powder locks in your foundation without feeling cakey while blurring imperfections and preventing shine.

When it comes to adding the final touches to your base (highlighters and blush), I prefer to use my fingers for cream or liquid textures. Not only does the warmth of your fingers let the product sink into the skin for a flawless finish, but it gives more control to where you place the product without moving your makeup underneath – use a gentle touch to push the product into the skin.

Purse-friendly picks

The real test starts when you leave your house, and whether you’re having a day out by the beach or strolling through the city, refresh your makeup on-the-go with these purse-friendly products. I always carry a refreshing face mist to use throughout the day, and I love MAC’s Prep + Prime Fix+ SPF30 Sun Spray, which is also great for topping up your sun protection; I keep mine in the fridge so it has an extra cooling effect. And if you’re worried about a makeup meltdown, try Fenty’s Invisimatte Blotting Papers, which remove excess oil without budging your base.
