Gianluigi Buffon's agent reveals excuse for costly error against Man Utd

Given the VAR chaos at the end it has almost been forgotten now, but there was a collector’s item in the remarkable game between Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United on Wednesday.

United’s incredible late victory has got their fans dreaming of European glory and of the club giving the manager’s job to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a permanent basis. something that they surely will do soon.

But in amongst the madness there was an incredibly costly error from Gianluigi Buffon, whose spillage of a Marcus Rashford shot on the half-hour mark allowed Romelu Lukaku to pounce to make the score 2-1 on the night.

Rashford would later beat the veteran Italian from 12 yards to seal the win in stoppage time, and ensure that another Champions League season goes by without the goalkeeper lifting the famous old trophy.

Buffon was heavily criticised in France, but the 41-year-old’s agent Silvano Martina says that the wet conditions were at least partly to blame for the error.

Buffon still hasn’t won the Champions League

“There is always a lot [of criticism], especially in  Italy . For sure the wet pitch didn’t help him,” he told Calcio Mercato .

“Sometimes there is nobody close to the goal, this time there was Lukaku ready to score. I am sure Gigi has forgotten it already.”

Martina added that he isn’t sure whether Buffon will extend his stay in Paris by another year, amid speculation that the club will let him go in the summer.

“I speak with the club and I don’t follow these rumours,” he said.

“Let the time pass by, then we’ll take a decision”.
