Get the most out of your food shop by getting organised with our cash-saving tips

IF all those money-saving and healthy-eating regimes got off to a bad start this year, you may want to reconsider your tactics.

Deborah Smith, who runs YouTube channel Living An Organised Life, reckons the key to keeping pounds in your pocket is organisation.

I asked Deborah to share her top tips . . .

MIX-UP MONDAYS: Waste not, want not by mixing it up every Monday. This is a money-saving, freezer-freeing tactic Deborah swears by.

She says: “I hate throwing food away. On a Monday, when we have odd things left in the fridge that need to be eaten up, we have a ‘mix-up meal’. We’ve had some very strange combinations.”

PERFECT BATCH: Meal preparation and batch cooking are key when watching the spend on groceries, saving time and keeping to a plan.

Deborah says: “If I’m making spaghetti bolognese, I double the recipe and freeze it in portions. I even make and freeze sandwiches for lunchboxes and cook a piece of meat on Sundays to have for meals during the week.”

MAKE A CHECK-LIST: Look at what you have before heading to the supermarket.

Deborah says: “Write a list of what you’ve got in the freezer, fridge and cupboards and plan meals around it. Make sure you use food with the shortest dates first to avoid wasting food. Then, write a weekly meal plan on a piece of paper or chalkboard in your kitchen. This stops the kids from constantly asking what’s for dinner too.”

VEG OUT: To bulk meals up and add fresh veg on the cheap, Deborah loves budget supermarket Aldi.

She says: “I love the Aldi Super 6 and pick recipes according to whatever is going to be on sale the following week.”
