Gerard Pique believes Barcelona would have gone on to win the Champions League and Copa del Rey had they not been beaten by Liverpool.

The dramatic comeback at Anfield secured Liverpool’s place in the Champions League final and Valencia added to Barcelona’s woes on Saturday with their own victory over the Catalan giants.

Valencia stunned Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final with a 2-1 win and Pique believes his side’s hopes of a treble winning campaign derailed at Anfield.

He said: ‘If we’d gone through at Anfield, I am convinced that we would have won the treble, we would have come here against sensations and we would have won the Champions League final.

‘We are very hurt and we have to endure the downpour.

‘The team is hurt, we did not expect to finish like this two weeks ago we opted for the treble and today we are going alone with La Liga.

‘The last 15 days have not been up to Barcelona, but you do not have to make hot decisions.’

Kevin Gameiro and Rodrigo scored for Valencia against Barcelona, as the underdogs stopped the La Liga champions from winning their fifth Copa del Rey in a row.

Lionel Messi pulled a goal back for Barcelona, but Valencia held out to win their first piece of major silverware since lifting the Copa del Rey trophy in 2008.

The defeat to Valencia again raises questions about Ernesto Valverde’s position at the club, but the manager refused to comment on his future after the game.

And the Barcelona boss also insisted the result at Anfield was not to blame for the loss to Valencia.

‘We have lost, but not because of a psychological issue,’ he said in his post-match press conference.

‘It’s different from the game we played a fortnight ago, but we’ve lost again, that is reality, the feeling.

‘We have not been able to fulfil our own expectations: we celebrated the league title, we thought we could make a triplet and we stayed on the road at the decisive moment in the Champions League and in the Copa del Rey.

‘You’re left with a bad feeling because we created that expectation and it has not been like that. We’re here to win titles and not for anything else.’
