Gary Neville insists Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made him ‘proud’ as Manchester United boss, despite the Norwegian’s sacking at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer was relieved of his duties on Sunday morning following United’s embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Watford 24 hours earlier.

Neville has stuck by Solskjaer throughout his tenure but particularly so in the last two months, when many criticised the former England coach for failing to call for his sacking.

And the former United skipper was quick to send a message to his former team-mate today, insisting that Solskjaer made him ‘proud’ with the job he did at the Theatre of Dreams.

‘You did us proud Ole,’ said Neville.

‘The last few months were tough but before that you restored some soul into the club.

‘All my love ❤️’.

Michael Carrick is set to lead the side against Villarreal and the club hope to make an interim appointment until the end of the season.

United will then look to appoint a long-term successor for Solskjaer, with Zinedine Zidane the current favourite for the job.

However, should United wait until the summer, the likes of Brendan Rodgers and Mauricio Pochettino could come into contention.
