Gary Neville and Paul Scholes unable to agree over Man Utd's best team

Manchester United legends Gary Neville and Paul Scholes have named which of Sir Alex Ferguson’s great United sides they think is the best, with the pair disagreeing.

The 1999 treble winning side and the 2008 Champions League and Premier League champions are the two sides in question, with both players part of each squad.

Neville has given his backing to the 2008 side, while Scholes prefers the 1999 squad.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville claimed that the core of the 2008 side was made up of eight world class players who you could ‘put in any team in the world’.

“Without that great Barcelona team [2009-2011], I think that this [2008 United team] would’ve been the greatest,” he claimed.

“There were eight players, I would say at the time Edwin Van der Sar, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez, you could put them in any team in the world, they were world class.

“I don’t think Manchester United have ever had a team that had so many world class players, and I look back at all the teams in history.

“Of course there has been world-class players at Manchester United but to have eight almost nine best in position almost in the world at that time, it was an unbelievable team.”

However, Scholes prefers the 1999 squad, citing the attacking options of Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the chief reason why.

Speaking to DAZN, Scholes said: “I think Gary Neville thinks that’s the best team he played in with them three [Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney]. I preferred the four in 1999.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have missed out on Jadon Sancho in the summer, but he still made some big moves in the transfer market with Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani all arriving.

But their start to the season has been a mixed bag, with a home defeat to Crystal Palace and a 6-1 thrashing by Spurs at one end of the scale, and a tremendous 2-1 win over PSG in Paris at the other.

The question now is whether they can find the right balance?

“Don’t get me wrong Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez what a threesome – absolutely devastating speed on the counter attack but for me playing with Teddy [Sheringham] and [Dwight] Yorke in that no.10 position it was always a position I liked to link with and then Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and [Andy] Coley brilliant again.

“There’s not a lot to choose between them. I probably enjoyed it more because I was getting involved with the forward players and not so much in 2008.”
