Gary Lineker's mind made up on Man Utd star Kobbie Mainoo after full England debut

England initially announced that the 18-year-old would join the U21 squad for the first time before his performance in Manchester United’s thrilling 4-3 FA Cup win against Liverpool.

That seemingly sparked the sudden decision to hand Mainoo – who had earned six U19 caps – his first senior call-up for this month’s friendlies against Brazil and Belgium at Wembley Stadium.

He started on the bench in England’s 1-0 defeat to Brazil last Saturday but impressed after replacing Conor Gallagher in the 75th minute.

Southgate then handed Mainoo his first start for the national team alongside captain Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw against Belgium.

His 74-minute display before making way for James Maddison earned more plaudits, leaving many suggesting that the midfield trio that faced Belgium should start in Germany this summer.

Lineker, who scored 48 goals in 80 England caps, weighed in on the praise, hailing Mainoo’s first start and insisting he deserves a place on the plane.

“A superb first start by Kobbie Mainoo for @England. He’s not only played himself into the squad for the Euros but quite possibly the starting lineup. Well played young man,” Lineker wrote on X (previously Twitter), followed by three clapping emojis.

Mainoo played a significant role in the build-up to Ivan Toney’s first-half penalty, twisting in midfield to remove Belgian players from the equation and change the pace before passing to Bellingham.

He was unfortunate not to bag a goal to celebrate his milestone achievement when his low, drilled shot was saved well by Matz Sels.

The United No. 37 showcased his physicality with fearless tackling and his ability to press opponents into mistakes, of which Everton’s Amadou Onana was a victim on the night.

Mainoo already looks at home on the international stage and is destined for a fruitful career at Old Trafford and with his country.

Born in Stockport, he has forced his way into Erik ten Hag’s plans this season, establishing himself as one of the first names on the Dutchman’s teamsheet.

Mainoo has started the last 12 Premier League games and appeared 20 times, a tally that would be increased if he didn’t have to wait until November through a pre-season injury.

Only Duncan Edwards and Marcus Rashford are the United players to have started for England at a younger age. It’s something Mainoo should get used to.
