Games Inbox: Next gen Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII Remake changes, and Cadence Of Hyrule love

I wanted to write in to respond to the question posed by Krampus, asking whether people think it’s a good idea for there to be an alternative to what happened to Aerith in Final Fantasy VII.

I think it’s a bad idea and it baffles me that people are asking for this to happen. In what other medium would this even come up. Would film fans ask for the writers of a remake of their favourite film to completely change the plot and create an alternative to one of the most significant events in the story?

What happens with Aerith is pivotal, it shapes everything that happens afterwards, it’s the most memorable moment in the game, it’s one of the most dramatic moments in any game ever and you’d be hard pressed to find a plot point in a game that has been spoken about more over the years.

It’s hard for me to fully explain why I think it is important that this isn’t changed in the sequel, without giving spoilers (not that anyone reading this is likely to be unaware of what we’re talking about) but I think changing something so essential to the story would undermine the entire thing. It wouldn’t be Final Fantasy VII anymore, it would be a very well-produced Reddit fan fiction.

It does sound like there will be some big changes to the story, Midgar will now take up a lot more time than it did in the original, there will obviously be much more character development, dialogue, etc. I’m fine with all of that but I feel pretty strongly that the big plot points should stay the same – I’m hoping Square don’t overthink this project any more than they already have.

I wouldn’t sign a petition and I wouldn’t be angry if they announced an alternative option to what happens; I just think it’s a terrible idea.

I’ll end by throwing a question back, why do people actually want this to happen?

GC: If it’s a remake of a film then it’s not unheard of for them to have major changes to the plot. Not that we’re taking a stance on whether Final Fantasy VII should change.
