Game of Thrones: Why did Jon Snow not become the leader of the Dothraki?

Game of Thrones has finally come to an end after eight series of stories. Yet a number of plot points remain not quite tied up. In particular, fans have been left wondering why Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington) didn’t become the leader of the Dothraki after killing their Khaleesi Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Game of Thrones season 8

The last ever episode of Game of Thrones saw Jon kill Daenerys in a dramatic moment.

After revealing her descent into madness as she showed no mercy to the inhabitants of King’s Landing, Jon believed he had no other choice than to kill her.

While this sealed his fate to be exiled to Castle Black and reunite with the Night’s Watch, fans have been wondering why things didn’t go another way.

Especially as having killed Daenerys, who was the Khaleesi of the Dothraki, some wondered why he did not become their leader.

WHICH GAME OF THRONES FINALE SCENE HAD THE WATER BOTTLE MISTAKE?

On the online message board Stack Exchange, user Budyn asked why did the Dothraki not follow Jon.

He wrote: “As we know from previous seasons, if you kill a Khal you become a Khal and Dothraki will treat you as their leader.

“There was no mention of them after Daenerys dies, so what could happen?”

This idea comes from how the Dothraki accepted Daenerys as their ruler after she kills the Khals in season six.

Although some have argued that this is likely to only be the case as she was married to Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa).

WHY WASN’T TYRION MENTIONED IN A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE?

User Lukas84 replied: “I’m not sure that this rule applies to just everyone – it looks more likely that you actually need to be a Dothraki to become a Khal.

“They accepted Dany because of the miracle by which she killed the other Khals, plus she was a Dothraki by marriage and she could speak their tongue.”

Another user TheLethalCarrot added: “The Dothraki follow strength above all else, betraying someone and stabbing an unexpected victim is more a sign of weakness to the Dothraki than strength so I doubt they would follow him for killing the current Khal[essi].”

In fact, it seems likely that the death of Khalessi would cause the Dothraki to wish to take revenge.

Which also left many fans wondering why the Dothraki did not kill Jon immediately after he murdered Daenerys.

WILL THERE BE AN ARYA STARK GAME OF THRONES SPIN-OFF SERIES?

However, while Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) speaks of the Unsullied’s reaction to her death, the Dothraki are not mentioned in the final episode.

One possibility could be that Jon confessed to Grey Worm immediately afterwards to accept his punishment, giving no time for reaction.

What’s more, even if Jon Snow did have some kind of a claim to lead them, it’s unlikely he would pursue it.

Throughout this season he has said he does not want to sit on the Iron Throne and he was a reluctant King of the North in earlier series.

This is one of the many questions that have remained unanswered in the wake of the finale.

Fans were also left wondering where Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) went during the Battle of Winterfell as well as where Drogon took Daenerys Targaryen’s body.
