Gail Porter 'ready to come home to Scotland' after dad dies in traumatic year

Scots TV presenter Gail Porter has said she is ‘ready to come home to Scotland’ after a traumatic year.

The 49-year-old recently lost her dad and has made plans to come home this weekend.

Speaking to STV’s Laura Boyd, Gail opened up about the last year and what she’s looking forward to most on her return to her homeland.

She said: “I’m coming home to Scotland on Sunday!

“Scotland obviously is my home and I’ve missed it so much and it’s been such a traumatic year for everybody, you know I lost my dad and I couldn’t get home and I couldn’t see my friends.

“Don’t get me wrong I love London and I have wonderful people down here but do you know what? Nothing beats Scotland and I cannot blinking wait!

“Obviously seeing my friends, being in the Royal Mile (Edinburgh) I’ve got my jogging stuff all packed so I’m going to do a wee run round Arthur’s Seat and just being in the air, the people… I’ll be elbow pumping everybody like ‘woohoo I’m back home!'”

Gail also revealed that the last time she was home in Scotland, her daughter Honey was really offended that people were using the term ‘Alright wee man’ as she didn’t understand that it was a term of endearment and thought it was because her mum had no hair.

Gail, who has hosted TV shows including Top of the Pops, Children in Need, Fully Booked and Dead Famous, started suffering from alopecia around 2005.

She said: “Everyone was going ‘Alright wee man’ and Honey, because I have got no hair, she was just thinking that everyone thought I was a wee man, but I was like no, no, it’s really affectionate in Scotland – wee man is affectionate!”

Gail’s father Craig Porter passed away during lockdown and she said that music helped her get through.

She said: “I’m a massive fan of Frankie Goes To Hollywood and I played The Power of Love a lot over lockdown and I actually got myself a karaoke mic which my daughters won’t allow me to use in front of anybody so I only use it on my own.”

Gail, who lives in London and won a BAFTA Scotland award for her recent documentary Being Gail Porter, had been keeping busy during lockdown volunteering at her local radio station, learning French and writing a new book about her life.

In a recent podcast, Gail lifted the lid on her time working as a presenter on Top of the Pops.

She revealed she never got the chance to meet some of the biggest acts to perform on the show as they often recorded in private.

And she was so nervous about meeting other bands that she would often run off and hide.
