Gabriel Jesus willing to convert to winger to win back Man City place with Sergio Aguero first choice

GABRIEL JESUS is willing to be converted back into a winger to get a regular game for Manchester City.

The Brazilian has been competing with Sergio Aguero for a striker spot since arriving at the Etihad almost three years ago.

And City’s 243-goal all-time leading goalscorer is showing no signs of slowing down — even though he turned 31 in the summer.

Aguero already has 12 goals in just 12 appearances this term — meaning Jesus is still having to be patient.

But on Tuesday against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, Pep Guardiola started both players with Jesus pushed out wide.

And with Aguero scoring so regularly, Jesus is looking for other ways he can get his chance to shine.

He said: “It’s difficult to describe Sergio. Sergio is the top scorer of the club and every game he shows us why he is the top scorer.

“Of course I have to learn from him because he is a legend. Every game he scores. I want to score every game but I think it is different, me and Sergio.

For Brazil, since the Copa America I play right winger, right side. I like it.

“I am 22 years old, I have to improve my football and practise my finishing. Our relationship is very good because sometimes we are in a derby Brazil against Argentina and that’s very different!”

Jesus has played out wide for both his country and his former club Palmeiras and says it is something he feels comfortable with.

He added: “For Brazil, since the Copa America I play right winger, right side. I like it.

“I started with the position in my old club and after I got to play striker but I like to play both positions.

“It is very important you can play more than one. I don’t really have a preference — although I know always I am going to respect the manager’s decision.”

Yet while there is no Aguero to worry about when it comes to the wide positions in Guardiola’s team, there are plenty of other obstacles in his way.

There he will find himself competing with Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez — and Leroy Sane when the German has recovered from knee surgery.

Jesus smiled: “That’s it. That is City, the competition is very high but City has good players and an amazing team. Always it is good to play with the big players.”
