A FURIOUS Piers Morgan has blasted a single mum who claimed “men can be mothers too”, as a shouting match erupted on Good Morning Britain earlier today.
Amy Nickell was defending a London-based theatre company who sparked debate by calling for “female-identifying mothers” to help write a new play.
Speaking about her son Freddy, she told Piers, 53: “I have a four-year-old, he think I’m Mummy and Daddy.”
Losing his rag, Piers hit back: “No he doesn’t. Has he ever called you Daddy? How many times has he said ‘hi Daddy’?
“Your son has never called you Daddy for a reason. You know why? You’re Mummy.”
But Amy insisted: “That’s irrelevant. He buys me a Father’s Day card and says ‘you are a Mum and a Dad to me’.”
It was left to co-host Susanna Reid, 48, to bring the row to an end – as it ran over the allotted time and guest Sonia Poulton struggled to get a word in.
Viewers found the whole debate “ridiculous”, “stupid” and asked: “Can men be mothers? I f***ing give up.”
One woman wrote the entire debate was “stressing me this morning”. She added: “@piersmorgan was so mad and I would be too at that woman’s attitude”.
While another bloke tweeted: “Seriously.. this debate which isn’t a debate sums up where we are atm. Can men be mothers? WTF”.
Piers and Amy clashed throughout the debate, with the anchor arguing: “They are male and female titles.”
He added: “Can I literally just say ‘I am a woman?’”
But Amy goaded Piers, saying: “I am a woman, but I am also capable of the skills it takes to father a child.
“Similarly you are a man and you are capable of the skills it takes to mother a child.
“Hopefully, I’m not sure because nurturing, caring, is that in your capabilities?”
Dad-of-four Piers hit back that they raised his kids “very well”, adding: “But they’ve always known who their mum and their dad is – what’s wrong with that?”
He continued: “A man can pretend to be a mother all he likes, but he can’t breastfeed his children. There are limitations to ‘motherhood for men’.
“Mothers are women. I hate to break it to you.
“It’s an insult to every damn mother in the country that suddenly blokes can come along and go ‘I’m Mummy’. No you’re not, you’re Daddy.”
