Ian Wright has blasted Granit Xhaka after the Arsenal captain clashed with his own fans and told them to ‘f**k off’.

Xhaka reacted badly when his substitution during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday was greeted with sarcastic cheers.

The Switzerland international, who was named Unai Emery’s official captain exactly a month ago, goaded the supporters before removing his shirt and storming down the tunnel.

Reacting to the shocking outburst, Arsenal legend Wright told Match of the Day 2: ‘Players getting booed is not the best, but this is the captain.

‘They are frustrated that he hasn’t run off the pitch. I’ve seen him before bolt off when he’s substituted. He’s walked off and then he goads them.

‘We’re talking about fans who have watched him play a handful of good games in three years. And he’s treating them like that.

‘He should apologise. That’s the guy Arsenal have chosen as captain… that’s not captain behaviour.

‘Arsenal fans have been patient with him. He owes them a lot more than that.’

BBC presenter Mark Chapman attempted to rationalise Xhaka’s reaction but Wright, shaking his head, said: ‘He’s the captain.

‘He’s got the responsibility. You can’t go on like that. He’s the captain. The manager has faith in him and he’s done that.’

Two goals within the first ten minutes from Sokratis Papastathopoulos and David Luiz put Arsenal in complete control at the Emirates.

But Crystal Palace fought back superbly and earned a point through goals from Luka Milivojevic and Jordan Ayew.
