Fujifilm's $160 Instax LiPlay camera lets you choose which photos to print

Fujifilm’s new $160 Instax LiPlay camera lets you choose which photos to print, snap pictures remotely, and add playable voice messages

  • The $160 camera comes in 3 colors: Stone White, Elegant Black, and Blush Gold
  • Photos can be reviewed on its digital screen before choosing which to print out
  • You can also record 10-second audio clips and add frames and filters to images
  • Built-in storage can hold roughly 45 files, can be expanded greatly with micro SD
  • Instax LiPlay will also let you print photos from your smartphone’s Camera Roll

Fujifilm is stepping up its game as nostalgic instant-print cameras continue to make their comeback.

The Japanese company recently launched the newest model in its Instax Instax Mini line-up, the $160 hybrid LiPlay instant camera.

Unlike its predecessors, LiPlay lets you review your photos and choose which ones to print.

While this arguably goes against the novelty of Polaroid-style photography in the first place, in some way removing the element of candidness, the hybrid is perfect for those hoping to have the best of both worlds without wasting film on sub-par snaps.

The rechargeable compact camera also pairs with an app that lets you use your smartphone as a remote control, and comes with the ability to record sound that you can add directly to prints using a QR code.

Fujifilm’s newest instant camera comes equipped with a slew of new features despite being its smallest, sleekest design yet in the series.

The inclusion of a sound option means you can record up to ten seconds of audio that can be converted to QR code.

Once printed, you can scan with a smartphone and replay messages as many times as you want.

It also comes with frames and programmable shortcuts so you can easily access your favorite designs to add to photos before printing.

There are 10 filters pre-installed, and an additional 30 in the accompanying app that can be added to the shortcuts.

Instax LiPlay also serves as a standalone instant printer, allowing you to print photos directly from your smartphone Camera Roll on its credit card-sized film.

Image quality is surprisingly sharp at 2560 by 1920 pixels, and shutter speed adjusts from 1/4 sec to 1/8000 sec.

It focuses as close as 10 centimeters.

The camera also comes with built-in storage that can hold roughly 45 files, though this can be expanded greatly with the use of a micro SD card.

There are only a few buttons, each of which is labelled with a clear image of its function, so the mini camera is incredibly straightforward to use, giving you control over basic customization options such as filters and sound without falling into complexity.

It relies on a built-in lithium ion battery that allows for roughly 100 prints when fully charged.

All in all, LiPlay is a delightful addition to the Instax family of instant cameras and is far more compact than the bubblier designs that came before it, making it easier to slip into a bag or a pocket to carry around anywhere.

The $160 camera is out now in three colors: Stone White, Elegant Black, and Blush Gold.
