From Prince Charles to Prince Louis: a look back at all of the royal baby photocalls

In just a few short weeks we will welcome a new addition to the British Royal Family – the son or daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Earlier this year, Meghan Markle told crowds in Birkenhead that she was due in “late April or early May” – but the Daily Mail has reported that Meghan may not pose for a photocall with the new baby like her sister-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge.

These claims (unsubstantiated by the Palace) come from podcast ‘On Heir’, where hosts and royal experts Emily Andrews and Omid Scobie discuss the reasons why Meghan may not stand on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital in London – and why the Duchess may not even give birth at the Lindo Wing at all.

Speaking on the podcast, Scobie noted: “Given what we know about Meghan, the optics of a totally glamorous, picture-perfect moment hours after giving birth are not quite in alignment with her views on the world.”

Andrews added: “At the moment, we understand that she isn’t, she doesn’t want to do that, isn’t going to do that.”

The Princess Royal (formerly Princess Anne) was the first royal mother to be papped on the steps of the Lindo Wing after giving birth to her first child, Peter Phillips. While Princess Anne did not stop for a formal photo – instead walking down the steps into the waiting car – Princess Diana and Prince Charles were the first to embrace the photo opportunity outside the Lindo Wing when Prince William was born in 1982.

Prince Harry was also born at the Lindo Wing, as were the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The Duke and Duchess of York opted for The Portland Hospital, near Regents Park in London, for the birth of their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, while the Earl and Countess of Wessex opted to have their children at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey.

While it is currently unconfirmed where the Duchess of Sussex will choose to give birth to her first baby, the nation will soon have a brand new royal baby to coo over.
