From ponytails to French plaits — our simple guide so dads can easily style their daughter’s hair

WOULD the man in your home know a ponytail from a pigtail – or even a French bun from a doughnut?

Prince William revealed last week that he had to watch YouTube tutorials to learn how to style his three-year-old daughter Charlotte’s hair.

But he still struggles tying it into a ponytail — to which laughing wife Kate replied: “Have you tried to do a plait?”

Lynsey Clarke invited Kevin Warner, 28, from Bexley, Kent, to have a go at styling his four-year-old daughter Esmay’s glossy locks – and here she offers simple step-by-step instructions.

Ponytail

  1. USE a small, soft brush to part hair just off centre and comb strands into a bunch at the nape of the neck.
  2. PUT all the hair inside an elastic hair band. Hold the pony with one hand and pull the band tight to one side.
  3. TWIST the band to create another hole. Put the thumb inside hole to keep it taut and pull hair through. Repeat on the other side until the pony is secure. Repeat these steps using a scrunchie to cover the elastic hair band.

Pigtail plaits

  1. PART the hair down centre from forehead to nape of neck, separating into two sections. Brush smooth.
  2. TAKE one half of hair and divide into three sections. Cross the sections – left over middle, right over middle.
  3. KEEP crossing the sections until you reach the end of the hair. Follow the same steps for the other half of hair. When done, secure each side with an elastic hair band and place braids in front of shoulders.

French plait

The French plait may look complicate, but it’s just three simple steps
  1. TAKE a selection of hair from hairline by forehead. Split into three sections. Cross left over middle, right over middle
  2. EACH time you cross, pick up additional hair and add to the sections on the outside to incorporate it into braid.
  3. CONTINUE to cross and pick up hair until you reach nape of neck. Remember, when you pick up additional hair to incorporate into braid, add to the sections on the outside – not the centre. Secure using hair band and a scrunchie.

Bun

The bun is a simple, classic style that’s super easy to achieve
  1. BRUSH hair backwards from forehead, and upwards from nape of neck, and gather it together by the crown.
  2. SECURE using a hair band. Wrap the pony around hair band so elastic is covered, then secure with grips.
  3. MAKE sure the remaining hair at the end of the pony and any fly-aways are tucked in using Kirby grips. Tidy up the baby hairs around the hairline by wetting and carefully combing back towards the bun.
