Firefighters tear down wall to rescue kittens trapped inside

Rescuers found these tiny kittens after they started meowing from inside a wall.

The animals had become trapped after falling down an incomplete cavity in a newly built glass conservatory wall.

The owner of the house in Brent called the RSPCA after hearing them make noise but initially thought they were in the ceiling.

When rescuers arrived they tracked the animals to the wall and with the help of the London Fire Brigade removed tiles to get them out.

RSPCA animal collection officer Jill Sanders said: ‘Luckily the homeowners were lovely and very understanding – what looked like a straightforward rescue actually became very complicated and we had to take a lot of the wall out to reach them.

‘After just over three hours of work for the RSPCA five very small and very cold kittens were found and I warmed them up with a hot water bottle.

‘They were so young and absolutely freezing, if they had been left another day they would not have been able to survive.’

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson added: ‘The homeowner did exactly the right thing in calling the RSPCA in the first instance and we would always urge people to do the same if they see an animal stuck or in distress.’

The RSPCA think the kittens were abandoned by their mother when she could not get to them.

The animals who were named MacAvity, Rumtum, Wally and Jemima after a Facebook appeal are now recovering at RSPCA Putney Animal Hospital.
