Fenerbahce president Ali Koc has revealed that the club are ‘closer’ than ever to completing a ‘dream’ move for Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil.

Ozil, 32, has been frozen out of Mikel Arteta’s plans this season and looks certain to have played his final match for the north London outfit given his contract comes to an end of the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Reports last week suggested DC United were in pole position to land Ozil – with the MLS outfit offering to help expand the midfielder’s M10 brand – but conflicting rumours emerging from Turkey claimed he was in fact on the cusp of agreeing a three-and-a-half year deal with Fenerbahce.

The German’s brother, Mutlu, fuelled talk of an impending switch to Istanbul last weekend by sharing a picture of Fenerbahce’s crest on his Instagram page with a cheeky ‘winking face’ emoji.

Responding to the recent speculation, Fenerbahce president Koc told Turkish outlet TRT Spor: ‘Ozil would be a dream for us at Fenerbahce.

‘The club knows what the coach wants and our transfer policy is guided by that.

‘There hasn’t been an official announcement. What I can say is we are closer than before.’

Addressing the media at a press conference last week, Fenerbahce manager Erol Bulut claimed the playmaker’s future will become ‘clear’ imminently.

‘Mesut Ozil’s situation will become clear in the coming days,’ he said.

‘Mesut’s name is very common. It is not possible for me to make a comment before he comes.’

Ozil has repeatedly underlined his desire to see out the remainder of his contract at Arsenal, where he remains the club’s top earner on wages of £350,000-a-week.

However, Arsenal are desperate to remove Ozil’s eye-watering wages from the books and Arteta believes there’s a chance the World Cup winner could be set for the exit door at the Emirates before the end of the January transfer window.

‘If something is sorted this month it’s because it’s good for both parties: because it’s good for Mesut and his future and because it’s good for the club,’ the Spaniard said last week.

‘If that’s the case, we will move forward. If it’s not the case, the player will continue here.’

‘We are aware of all the conversations that we had with Mesut, internally and with his agent.

‘And this communication keeps going and of course because from now on he’s free to talk to any club. ‘He’s entitled to do that as well.’
