Express.co.uk poll: Readers back Boris Johnson on prorogation of Parliament

More than half of those who took part in the online survey said the decision to suspend the Commons should be taken by the Government. A total of 12,446 people responded to the poll and 7,034 (57 percent) backed Boris Johnson’s controversial move to halt proceeding for five weeks ahead of Brexit.

The poll found 3,688 (30 percent) thought the Queen should have the power to over-rule the Prime Minister when it came to the prorogation of Parliament.

But only 723 people (5 percent) believed MPs should be involved in making the decision and 872 (7 percent) reckoned it was a matter for the Supreme Court. Just 129 people (1 percent) ticked don’t know.

A Supreme Court hearing to decide if Mr Johnson acted legally when he prorogued Parliament is under way in London.

Three senior Scottish judges ruled his decision was unlawful in a landmark case last week but three English judges sitting in the High Court had earlier which concluded the length of the prorogation was “purely political” and not a matter for the courts.

Eleven Supreme Court judges are now being called up to give a final ruling.

Prorogation is the end of a parliamentary session brought about other than by the dissolution of Parliament before a general election.

Mr Johnson advised the Queen on August 28 to prorogue Parliament for five weeks and it was suspended on September 9.

The court will hear further submissions tomorrow and Thursday but it is not clear when a ruling will be given.

A crowd of about 40 protesters, holding signs saying “Defend democracy”, “Reopen Parliament” and “They misled the Queen”, remained outside the Supreme Court throughout the hearing.

A smaller number of pro-Brexit demonstrators also gathered outside the historic building on Parliament Square.
