Andre Gomes is ‘expected to make a full recovery’ from the fracture dislocation to his right ankle suffered while playing for Everton against Tottenham on Sunday.

The 26-year-old suffered the horrific injury in an unfortunate challenge involving Son Heung-min and Serge Aurier in the Premier League clash.

The Tottenham pair, and all other players in the vicinity, were visibly shaken by the gut-wrenching injury, but there is some good news following the Portugal international’s operation.

A club statement read: ‘Everton Football Club can confirm Andre Gomes underwent surgery to repair a fracture dislocation to his right ankle earlier today and the procedure went extremely well.

‘Andre will now spend some time recovering in hospital, before returning to use Finch Farm to start his rehabilitation under the guidance of the club’s medical staff. He is expected to make a full recovery.

‘On behalf of Andre, the club would like to thank all Everton supporters and members of the wider football family for the overwhelming messages of support we have received since yesterday’s match.’

There has been no time frame put on the midfielder’s recovery, but he is unlikely to return to action for the Toffees this season, despite the successful surgery.

Tottenham sent a message to the stricken midfielder after the dreadful incident, tweeting: ‘Everyone at the Club sends their best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery to @aftgomes’

Gomes signed on a permanent contract at Everton over the summer, arriving from Barcelona for around £22m after an impressive loan spell last season.

He has made nine appearances in all competitions this season and Toffees manager Marco Silva will hope his recovery is swift and after becoming a key part of his midfield.
