The Brexit Party leader claimed the showdown was needed to help voters understand Labour’s “confused” position on the country’s departure from the EU. He also revealed that his fledgling political movement has now signed up more than 85,000 registered supporters. Mr Farage made his challenge to the hard-Left Labour leader on the Sophy Ridge On Sunday show on Sky News yesterday.
Insisting his party could attract millions of former Labour voters in the European Parliament election being held in the UK on May 23, the ex-Ukip leader said: “There are five million voters out there, Labour voters, who voted to Leave, particularly in the Midlands, the North and South Wales. I would love between now and polling to have a debate with Jeremy Corbyn about this as people are very confused about what Labour are standing for.”
Mr Farage added: “I think if we can dig into the Labour vote, we can surprise even ourselves.”
Prime Minister Theresa May’s attempt to agree a Brexit compromise deal with Mr Corbyn could lead to the “final betrayal” of Leave voters, Mr Farage warned.
Labour and the Tories were threatening “coalition of politicians against the people”, he said.
“I think millions of people would give up on both Labour and the Conservatives.This would be the final betrayal.”
Mr Farage said the rush of supporters signing up to the party had helped to build a £2million campaign fund for the election. “In a few weeks the Brexit Party has grown from an idea born of frustration with the establishment to the fastest growing political force in the land,” he said.
“With our £25 fee, over 85,000 people have signed up to help take on the legacy parties and provide the leadership this country is so desperately looking for. “These supporters are spread across the length and breadth of these islands,” he said.
In the interview, Mr Farage also admitted his former party Ukip was now “past its sell-by date”.
